New Antiviral Drug Identified for COVID-19 Treatment 💊💉🔬

A team of researchers from the University of Nottingham have identified a plant based antiviral drug, named thapsigargin, triggers a highly effective broad-spectrum host-centered antiviral innate immune response against COVID-19 and two other major types of respiratory viruses. Thapsigargin is a naturally occurring compound isolated from the umbelliferous plant Thapsia garganica.

Monoclonal Antibodies Authorized for Treatment of COVID-19💉📄🦠

The U.S Food and Drug Administration issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Eli Lilly and AbCellera's monoclonal antibody, etesevimab and bamlanivimab for the treatment of COVID-19. A monoclonal antibody is a protein made in-vitro that acts like antibodies in the human immune system. A monoclonal antibody is designed to bind to a single substance.

How SARS-CoV-2 Damages Lung Cells Within Hours🧫🦠🧪

A team of researchers has developed one of the most extensive maps of the molecular activities triggered inside these cells at the beginning of the COVID-19 infection, as a result of months of multidisciplinary research studies examining several lung cells infected with the SARS-CoV-2.

Promising New Drug Candidate Against COVID-19🔬👨‍🔬💊

A research team led by UCSF molecular biologists has identified a promising drug candidate against COVID-19, an anti-cancer drug which reportedly kills the novel coronavirus in lab studies and was shown to be 30 times more potent than Remdesivir which is one of the few antiviral drugs being used to treat COVID-19.

Use of miR-146a to Tackle Ventilator – Induced Lung Injuries in COVID Patients 🧬🩺

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) occurs in patients with pneumonia, sepsis or even COVID and is the main cause of pulmonary edema. Supportive care with mechanical ventilators (MV) is the standard care for ARDS patients but the pressure used to inflate the lungs is likely to cause further lung damage. It’s invasive in nature and doctors view it as a last resort.

Stem Cells Prove Effective in Treating Severe Cases of COVID-19 🧫💉🦠

University of Miami Miller School of Medicine researchers led a unique and groundbreaking randomized controlled trial demonstrating umbilical-cord derived mesenchymal stem cell infusions safely reduce the risk of death and quicken the recovery time for the even the severest COVID-19 patients.

Mutant Coronavirus Strain Reaches the U.S. 🦠😷

On Tuesday, the first known U.S. case of the new coronavirus variant was confirmed to have infected a Colorado man in his 20’s with no history of recent travel and no close contact with anyone infected.

FDA Grants Authorization to Moderna’s COVID-19 Vaccine 🧪🦠💉

On Friday, the FDA issued an emergency authorization for a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Moderna, the second such vaccine to be cleared in the United States. Here’s what to know:

Novel Assay Detects Antigen-Specific Antibodies Within Twenty Minutes 🔬🦠💾⌚️

Current methods to test for antigen-specific antibodies in plasma are complex, expensive, and labor intensive. Researchers from University of California, Santa Cruz (@ucsc) developed a method of detecting antibodies in blood plasma by using biolayer interferometry. The novel technology was coined biolayer interferometry immunosorbent assay (BLI-ISA).

Does the COVID-19 Virus Enter the Brain? 🦠🧠😷

More and more evidence of people with COVID-19 suffering from cognitive effects is surfacing and researchers are discovering why. In a recent study, researchers from the University of Washington have found that the spike protein, often depicted as the red arms of the virus, can cross the blood-brain barrier in mice, suggesting that SARS-CoV-2 can enter the brain.

FDA Gives Green Light to Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine 🚦🦠💉

Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine passed a critical milestone today when the FDA’s vaccine advisory panel, composed of independent scientific experts, infectious disease doctors and statisticians, voted 17 to 4 in favor of authorizing the vaccine. The FDA is likely to do so within days, giving health care workers and nursing home residents priority to begin receiving the first shots as soon as next week.

Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine Appears to be 94.5% Effective 💉🦠😷

🧑‍🔬 Moderna’s phase three clinical trials enrolled more than 30,000 participants to test the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness. 💉 The vaccine has been deemed 94.5% effective at preventing virus infection 🤕 Side effects were mild to moderate, and included pain at injection site, fatigue, muscle pain, and headache 🧪 Moderna is on track to develop up to 1 billion doses globally in 2021 🧬 The vaccine is based on new technology containing mRNA, or genetic instructions that help the body recognize the coronavirus’ spike protein – which it uses to enter the body

Pfizer Covid Vaccine is More than 90% Effective

Pfizer and BioNTech have announced their coronavirus vaccine was more than 90% effective in preventing Covid-19 during their Phase 3 clinical trials. Scientists are hoping for a vaccine that is at least 75% effective, Dr. Anthony Fauci has said one that is 50% or 60% effective would also be acceptable.

Can AI Differentiate Covid-19 from the Flu?

With Covid-19 cases surging in parts of the U.S. mid flu season, developers of artificial intelligence tools are about to face their biggest test of the pandemic: Can AI help doctors differentiate between the two respiratory illnesses, and accurately predict which patients will become severely ill?
